什么是硅光子
目前的电脑都是使用电信号进行数据运算，可以使用电信号或光信号进行数据传输，由于光信号的频宽比电信号高出许多，因此数据中心的服务器之间目前大多使用光信号传输，服务器会先经由“光发射模组”将电信号的“开与关”转换成光信号的“亮与暗”再送入光纤，传送到接收端再经由“光接收模组”将光信号的“亮与暗”转换成电信号的“开与关”，如下图所示。
可以传递电磁波信号的介质称为“波导(Waveguide)”，因为光是一种电磁波，因此可以传导光的介质称为“光波导(Optical waveguide)”，光纤(Fiber)是用来传递光信号最基本的光学元件，因此光纤就是一种光波导，但是光通信系统必须处理光信号的分光、合光、切换、调变等，因此除了光纤以外，仍然需要其它可以处理光信号的元件，我们称为“光波导元件”或“集成光学(OIC：Optical Integrated Circuit)”。
制作集成光学元件的主要材料有“氧化硅（Silica）”与“硅（Silicon）”两种：
氧化硅（Silica） ：折射率大约1.5，是石英或玻璃的主要成分，其中二氧化硅的单晶又称为“石英（Quartz）”，二氧化硅的非晶又称为“石英玻璃”，外观呈透明无色，另外一种光学性质与氧化硅很像的材料是“玻璃（Glass）”，玻璃是氧化钾、氧化钠、氧化硅的混合物，外观呈透明无色，由于是混合物，光穿透时损耗比较大，这些材料的光学性质都不错，可以直接在上面制作折射率较大的光波导。
硅（Silicon）：折射率大约3.5，就是晶圆厂使用的硅晶圆，虽然硅晶圆在外观上不透明，看起来光波好像无法穿透，但是光通讯产业所使用的光源都是“红外光”，红外光可以穿透硅晶圆，只是损耗比较大而已，由于硅晶圆的制程比较成熟，所以许多公司都试著发展这种技术，使用硅晶圆做为光波导元件再整合其他主动与被动光学元件通称为“硅光子（Silicon photonics）”。
简单地说，目前产业上都是使用硅晶片来制作运算元件， 未来如果能够把处理光信号的“光波导元件”整合到硅晶片上，让硅晶片同时处理电信号的运算与光信号的传输，就称为“硅光子（Silicon photonics）” ，这不仅可以缩小元件尺寸，减少耗电量，更能够降低成本，但是目前这种硅光子元件门槛较高，技术还不成熟。
传统光收发模组，是低阶的封装技术
目前商业上已经成熟量产的“光收发模组（Optical transceiver）”是结合“光模块发射（TOSA）”与“光接收组件（ROSA）”。
光模块发射（TOSA：Transmitter Optical Sub-Assembly） ：将左侧金手指输入的电信号，经由雷射驱动器来驱动雷射二极体（LD）转换成光信号，传送到右侧的光纤输出。
光接收组件（ROSA：Receiver Optical Sub-Assembly） ：将右侧光纤输入的光信号，经由光侦测器(PD)与转阻放大器(TIA)转换成电信号，传送到左侧的金手指输出。

由上图可以看出，目前商业上已经成熟量产的光收发模组都是基础的封装技术，用图中绿色的印刷电路板（PCB）结合雷射二极体（LD）与光侦测器（PD）等元件，金属走线距离长，元件尺寸大，耗电量高。而硅光子元件门槛较高，技术还不成熟，因此专家们想到，可以使用“先进封装”的方式，把运算用的硅晶片与光收发模组包装在一起，我们称为“共同封装光学（CPO：Co-Packaged Optics）”。
共同封装光学，是硅光子的前哨站
传统光交换机是将硅晶圆制作的数字交换芯片与光收发模组（Transceiver）使用印刷电路板（PCB）连接起来，交换芯片（黑色）与光收发模组（红色）距离较远，元件尺寸大耗电量高，如下图a所示；而共同封装光学（CPO）是将硅晶圆制作的数字交换芯片（黑色）与光收发模组（红色）直接利用先进封装包装在一起，元件尺寸小耗电量低，如下图b所示。

而台积电很早就投入这个领域，针对数据中心市场推出了新型的先进封装技术“紧凑通用光子引擎（COUPE：Compact Universal Photonic Engine）”。
下图是思科（CISCO）与智邦（Accton）合作开发的光交换器，图中的数字交换芯片就是使用共同封装光学（CPO）技术将数字交换芯片与光收发模组包装在一起，取代传统的插拔式光收发模组，并以外接雷射的方式提供硅光子晶片光源，但是其中最关键的共同封装光学技术大部分是掌握在国外厂商手中，例如英特尔、博通、Cisco/Luxtera/Lightwire/Acacia、Juniper/Aurrion等。

硅光子可以应用在什么领域？
硅光子（SiPh）技术泛指将许多原本是分立的电子元件与光学元件，利用成熟的硅晶圆与半导体制程，制作成微型化的晶片，用来取代传统“光收发模组（Optical transceiver）”，目前主要应用在数据中心做为短距离传输资料，或是应用在长矩离光纤网络。
未来如果硅光子技术成熟，甚至可以取代现在的印刷电路板或导线载板上的铜导线，用光信号取代电信号，应用在芯片到芯片之间的数据传输，可以有效提高元件密度、缩小元件体积，增加传输速率，提高可靠性与良率，同时由于使用硅晶圆制作，可以兼具量产与成本优势。
